Invasive species can cause irreparable harm, including reducing biodiversity, diminishing water quality and/or soil health, fragmenting habitat, and damaging infrastructure. Prevention of new invasions is the best tool we have since containment and eradication efforts often come with exorbitant costs. Often, prevention techniques center around simple measures that individuals can easily implement in their daily lives. We work with partners to implement innovative programs to educate the public about the impacts of invasive species and promote voluntary behavioral change to prevent greater spread of invasive species. This has become increasingly important in recent years with an exponentially greater number of Americans getting outside.
Here is a snapshot of the work we do: • Invasive species can be spread on gear, boats, and other recreation equipment. By partnering with local fly shops, and recreation businesses we promote Clean, Drain, Dry prevention steps and create stewards among anglers and boaters. • Unwanted pets can become invasive species when released into the wild. Our Don't Let It Loose program works closely with independent pet stores to promote responsible pet ownership and connects pet owners with re-homing options. • Invasive insect pests threaten our wild and urban forests. Our Forest Pest Project brings the art of fly tying and education on invasive pests together to help create stewards protecting our natural landscapes. • The diversity of invasive species are featured in our many online youth education pieces for all to benefit from. Students that partake in our hands-on activities take our lessons into future activities with their family and friends to protect our waters from invasive species.
Partnerships are a powerful way to make a difference! We work behind the scenes with management agencies to protect our natural places from invasive species.
