WOLVES: BCC continues to lobby MTFWP Commissioners for reduced wolf-hunt quotas along the Montana-Yellowstone National Park borders, and lobbies MTFWP and the legislature to change the way wolves are managed in Montana to a region-by-region plan. One of our members served on the MTFWP Finding Common Ground committee. BCC provided educational talks for conservation organizations. Along with MTFWP and conservation organizations, BCC contributed to a wolf curriculum for high school students and established the Living with Wolves program.
BEARS: BCC established Bear Aware Gardiner which since 2009 provided one free bear-resistant garbage can to any Gardiner or Jardine resident who needs one. BCC runs Public Service Announcements about bear spray and living with bears. In collaboration with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, B.A.G. has placed around 300 bear-resistant garbage cans in our community and funded, in part or in full, several commercial cans, including the ones in front of Gardiner Market. We received grant money to place public bear-resistant cans around Gardiner and to pay someone to empty them. BCC has run The Great Bear Can Give-Away, movie, dinner, and raffles of bear cans.
BISON: BCC works with the Interagency Bison Management Partners for the common goal of maintaining a wild, free-ranging bison population. BCC works with an IBMP sub-committee on carcass mitigation resulting from hunting in the Gardiner Basin. BCC published public service announcements about the bison hunt in Gardiner area.
LIVING WITH WILDLIFE: BCC hosts webinars on living with wildlife in Montana. The webinars offer resources and safety tips for living with wolves, cougars, and bears. BCC pulls in experts from both state and federal agencies to offer concise information for both novice and expert wildlife lovers. All of the webinars are recorded for future use and can be found here: https://northernplains.org/living-with-wildlife/
MINING: All these years later, mining has again become a focus. Crevice Mining Group announced plans to resume hard rock mining for gold in Jardine. BCC has organized an effort to stop that plan through community forums, public protests, and connections to local, state, and federal environmental policymakers. BCC supported the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act which prohibits mining on public lands in Park County. BCC remains committed to stopping mining in our community on private lands as well.
SOLAR ENERGY: BCC has brought solar energy to the Gardiner Basin by putting 24 solar panels on the Gardiner School, leading solar workshops in the community, and doing a solar assessment of public buildings.
